About Us

Fostering a Spirit of Understanding

At Northeastern University, diversity and inclusion are vital to learning and discovery.

The value of diversity and inclusion is very much about experience — experiencing people, cultures, perspectives, and viewpoints different from what we know.  It’s about the way in which we engage with the world, the opportunity to learn from new perspectives, a core value for the University, an essential element of contemporary life, an expression of cultural pride, and a reflection of our campus, community, and global partners.

Our Vision of Diversity

The office aspires to distinguish itself as a model of excellence and innovation by developing the fluency necessary for our community to reject discrimination, learn and grow in a diverse, global society.

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion promotes the University’s commitment to equal opportunity, affirmative action, diversity, and social justice while building a climate of inclusion on and beyond campus.

Our mission is to provide leadership by cultivating an inclusive environment that denounces discrimination through innovation, collaboration and an awareness of global perspectives on social justice. We also promote compliance with relevant federal, state and local anti-discrimination laws.

The office works with students, faculty, and staff to identify and address sources of conflict, bias, and possible differential treatment, and provide information on additional campus resources, including the Office of University Equity and Compliance, the University Ombuds, and Human Resources Management, among others, to create an inclusive environment for all. We develop programs, advise and consult on policies, build outreach to external organizations, and provide services to students, faculty, staff, and the community.

The office advises and assists the president, senior administrators, and the campus community with implementing leadership strategies that advance diversity and contribute to the university’s aspirations.

The office also provides training in:

  • Affirmative action
  • Diversity and equity
  • Inclusion strategies
  • Prevention of discrimination

Key principles that guide the office’s mission are innovation, collaboration, commitment to excellence, and equity for all.

Statement of Land Recognition

We acknowledge the territory on which Northeastern University stands, which is the land of The Wampanoag and The Massachusett People.

While visiting campus, please honor the continued efforts of the Native and Indigenous community leaders who work to preserve the history and culture of the tribes which make up Eastern Massachusetts and the surrounding region. Today, Boston is still home to many indigenous peoples, including the Mashpee Wampanoag and Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah), the Mi’kmaq and many more in our region.
