Racial & Cultural Literacy Trainings

This series of online training modules provide the tools to better understand diversity and to address racism and other systemic inequities in our community.

These trainings are mandatory for all members of the Northeastern community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are we required to take the Racial and Cultural Literacy training?

(Excerpts from Provost David Madigan’s 11/1/21 email message to the university community)

“Last year, President Aoun announced a series of action steps that Northeastern would take to combat individual, institutional, and systemic racism. To embark on this work as an institution, Northeastern has launched an online anti-racism and cultural literacy training that is required of the entire university community – students, faculty, and staff – across our global network. The spirit of requiring everyone in our community to participate in this training is to promote our collective support for all things that improve our pursuit of shared values and communal efficacy.

The purpose of the training is to better equip our community to combat racism and other systemic inequities. The training comprises four interactive modules that introduce basic concepts, raise awareness, and inspire us to think about how we can apply these learnings in our everyday lives.”

Where can I find the Racial and Cultural Literacy Training?

Faculty and staff can find the modules in myNortheastern under Services/Links. Students who were registered for classes in Spring 2022 (excluding co-op) can access it through the Student Hub.

NOTE TO NEWLY REGISTERED FALL ‘22 STUDENTS (EXCLUDING THOSE ON CO-OP): You will be granted access to the training as classes begin and receive an email with the link and instructions from Academic Impressions, Northeastern’s partner in administering the survey. Once you receive that link, you’ll be able to access and complete the training via the Student Hub.

Is this training required?

Yes. This series of online training modules, which are mandatory for all members of the Northeastern community, will provide the tools to better understand why diversity matters, and to address racism and other systemic inequities in our community.

I can’t log in to Academic Impressions/I am in Academic Impressions and having technical issues with completing the course (i.e. I can only access 2-3 of the 4 modules)

Please email northeastern@academicimpressions.com so that the Academic Impressions team may troubleshoot the issue.

Academic Impressions tells me I am not a user and/or that I don’t currently have access to this content.
  • If you are new to the university, please wait one week and try again as names are constantly being added to the training list.
  • If you are on a leave of absence from the university, you will not be required to take the training until you return to work.
  • If you are designated as a temp non-student employee, you are not required to complete the training. All faculty and staff, both full-time and part-time are required to complete the training.
  • If you are on co-op, you will not be required to take the training until you resume classes.
What is the deadline for completion of the training?

You’ll have one month to complete the training from the point you receive access.

What if I am unable to complete the training modules by the deadline because I don’t receive access to the new link in time, or recently joined the university as a new employee?

If that’s the case, please email diversity@northeastern.edu for assistance.

What happens if I don’t complete the training?
  • You will receive reminders until your training is fully completed.
  • Students: If you fail to complete the training after multiple reminders, they may be referred to the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution. Should you subsequently appear in front of OSCCR for a bias-related incident, or any other matter related to the content of the online training, you may be issued stricter sanctions.
  • Faculty and Staff: Data on faculty and staff who do not complete the training will be sent to their supervisors.
I just completed my training, but why do I still receive a reminder?

Thank you for completing your training! Our report on completion status is generated bi-weekly. There might be a time lag between the date of your completion and the date when compliance data is updated. You may ignore the reminder in this case.

Students

All undergraduate and graduate students are required to take the online Racial and Cultural Literacy training if you are registered for a course other than co-op. If you were on a co-op, you are not assigned to take the training until you return.

Here’s who’s expected to complete the training: Undergraduate and graduate students newly registered for a course other than co-op. You will receive an email from Academic Impressions to notify you that the course is available through the Student Hub or on Academic Impressions.

I am an incoming student or recently admitted freshman and cannot access the material, do I need to complete the training by the deadline?

Incoming students will receive access to the training when they are officially taking classes.

Will I receive course credit for completing this training?

You will not receive course credit. It is a customized learning program based on our collective commitment to building an inclusive university/society.

I am a student on co-op, and I am unable to see any training modules on Academic Impressions.

You do not need to complete the training while on co-op. You’ll receive access to the training  once you’ve finished your co-op and registered for classes, and you’ll have 30 days to complete it.
